What Is the “Matcha Cruiser” for Serving Matcha?

The new original item from Senchado Tokyo is the “Matcha Cruiser Matcha Katakuchi Bowl.” Designed with the act of pouring prepared matcha in mind, this katakuchi bowl makes even the movements at your fingertips feel naturally elegant. It is a completely new creation made by artist Maki Nakahara, and this work is available exclusively through us.
A Katakuchi, Chosen for Matcha

The Matcha Cruiser is a bowl for whisking matcha, and at the same time, a vessel for pouring it.
When making a latte, you pour the whisked matcha into milk.
When sharing with someone, you pour it into a small glass.
As the ways of enjoying matcha have expanded, the need to transfer it from one vessel to another has actually increased. That is why a katakuchi was needed.
We wanted to create a katakuchi that was not only practical, but also truly embodied the shape and texture that Senchado Tokyo considers ideal. This matcha katakuchi bowl was born from that vision.
The spout is small, yet reassuringly well-formed. It is designed so that the matcha naturally gathers and flows smoothly to the very last drop. You can feel Nakahara’s signature in the way the piece is composed quietly and beautifully, without letting function overwhelm its presence.
“Cruiser” comes from the image of a ship cruising steadily forward without stopping. We chose this name to capture the satisfying flow of whisking the matcha, carrying it in the katakuchi, and pouring it smoothly into a guest’s bowl.
Matte White and Deep Green Luster

The exterior has the smooth, understated look of matte white porcelain. It softly catches the light and gives the form a crisp outline.
The interior comes in two glazes: “Shirakumo,” a refined, pure, translucent glass glaze with a faint bluish-white glow, and “Midorikumo,” a mesmerizing deep green. When filled with matcha, light reflects off the surface and the tonal variations shift gently. That contrast is what makes this vessel so appealing.

This is a bowl that moves lightly between modern design and craftsmanship. It brings both the practicality of an everyday tool and the lingering beauty of handmade work into your hands.
Maki Nakahara Profile
After graduating from Joshibi University of Art and Design, Nakahara worked at an interior design office before moving into the world of ceramics. She currently maintains a kiln in Nagasaki Prefecture, where she continues to create porcelain works using Amakusa pottery stone as well as custom-made pieces.
The appeal of her tools lies in their balance: never flashy, yet distinctly present; basic, yet somehow stylish.
Serve Matcha Time
If you want the green of matcha to take center stage, pair it with white or unglazed dessert plates. Dry sweets, biscuits, and agar-based confections with clean, defined shapes work especially well. Combining it with a wooden tray or iron or brass cutlery sharpens the matte white and makes the green inside look even more vivid.
It is also lovely to pour whisked matcha into a small glass and enjoy the fine texture of the foam. This is a vessel that lets you do more than simply whisk matcha; it lets you carry it to the table and share it with others. The Matcha Cruiser turns matcha time into a single, graceful ritual.

There is a quiet focus in the time spent whisking matcha. The sound of the chasen, the way the foam settles, and the aroma rising through the steam. Even in just a few minutes, one of matcha’s charms is the sense that the edges of your mood come back into focus.
Interest in matcha is growing not only in Japan but also among customers overseas, and the ways of drinking it are becoming more varied. People enjoy it whisked with hot water, blended with milk for a latte, or chilled over ice. Matcha is becoming ever more familiar as part of everyday life.
This is the tool we have long wanted: a vessel for pouring prepared matcha, a katakuchi.
Before You Buy
・Each piece is shaped by hand. Glaze depth and color will vary, so no two are exactly alike. Please enjoy the unique character of each one.
・Before first use, always wash with water or lukewarm water.
・After use, rinse promptly with hot water and dry thoroughly before storing.
・We do not recommend using a dishwasher.

What to Avoid
・Using abrasive cleaners, detergents containing abrasives, scouring powders, or metal scrubbers. Strong scrubbing may scratch the surface, so please avoid these and wash with a soft sponge instead.
・Although dishwasher use is possible, please note that the rim and spout may chip easily. The same caution applies when using a metal rack or basket.
・Using a microwave immediately after removing the piece from the refrigerator. Please avoid this, as it may cause cracks or breakage.
・Using the piece if it has any chips or cracks.
・Dragging the vessel across the table, as this may scratch the surface.
・Depending on the piece, prolonged soaking in water may cause stains due to differences in glaze. We recommend avoiding long periods of standing in water.
