The "SAKUZAN Pottery" in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.
Despite their simple shapes and coloring, these vessels with nuanced appearances are sure to shine on your dining table! Designed with food pairing in mind, these pieces will likely inspire various culinary ideas when you hold them.
Stylish Silhouettes and Coloring
SAKUZAN Pottery has been presenting seasonal collections since 2000. The "Kiritachi Plate" stands out as particularly stylish within their "LOOP" series.
Senchadou Tokyo has selected three colors: "Stone Grey," "Stone Mustard," and "Stone White".
The Kiritachi Plate, characterized by its stone-like texture, instantly adds a stylish touch to your table.
A Breakfast Companion
"When I saw this dish, I immediately wanted to use it for breakfast!" says Madoka, a designer at Senchadou Tokyo. The photo shows a smaller-sized toast, but it's perfect for regular sliced bread too.
According to stylist AI, this Kiritachi Plate is also ideal for children's breakfast plates.
"In my child's case, surprisingly, they don't eat from plates shaped like cars designed for kids. They prefer plates that look like adults'. At our home, if we serve rice balls, rolled omelet, and broccoli on a plate about this size, they'll eat it."
It's the perfect size for placing rice, a side dish, and vegetables. It might be nice to eat from matching plates with your children.
About SAKUZAN Pottery
"From beautiful work, beautiful vessels. From beautiful vessels, delicious smiles."
The history of SAKUZAN Pottery began in 1944 when the founder, Sakuichi, started a transportation and farming business under the name Yamasaku, later adding ceramic overglaze painting as a side business. In 1987, Nobuyasu Takai, the third generation, established "SAKUZAN Pottery Co., Ltd."

"Seeking that 'Just Barely Unstable' Point"
We always consider the balance between shapes and glazes from past works when creating new pieces. Sometimes, pieces made long ago sell better now than when they were first created, likely because cooking and plating methods have evolved.
The "Kiritachi Plate," for instance, has actually been around for 15 years. We originally made it for restaurants. But at the time, such flat plates weren't readily accepted. Deeper plates with curved edges were considered easier for plating.
However, in the past few years since we've reintroduced it, it's been selling rapidly. The key point of this series is the rough texture of the glaze. The texture changes with different glazes, so it varies by color.
Since we also supply to restaurants and hotels, we need to maintain consistent colors and textures. Stability is crucial. But I'm always seeking that 'just barely unstable' point in my creations. We could make more stable pieces, but that would result in a flat finish lacking depth.
About Individual Differences
These "Kiritachi Plates" are mass-produced yet individually molded and carefully fired by artisans, showcasing SAKUZAN Pottery's skill and extensive experience.
Due to the nature of the glaze, cracks may appear on the back of the plate as shown in the image, but this does not affect its use.
Also, the surface texture differs by color. Stone Grey and Stone White have a rough texture like real stone. Stone Mustard is smooth, providing a pleasant touch.
Before You Purchase
・Each piece is hand-molded. The glaze application and coloring are not identical. Please enjoy the unique character of each piece.
・Before first use, always wash with water or lukewarm water.
・Clean off any dirt promptly after use and dry thoroughly before storage.
・When stacking, place a thin paper between pieces to prevent scratches.
・Dishwasher safe, but avoid overcrowding to prevent damage.
・The bottom is treated, but if it feels rough when turned over, we recommend lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth it out.
Things to Avoid
・Using abrasives, abrasive cleaners, scouring powders, or metal scrubbers. (Avoid these as they may scratch the surface; use a soft sponge for washing instead.)
・Using in the microwave immediately after taking out of the refrigerator. (This may cause cracks or breakage.)
・Dry heating or direct flame use.
・Using when cracked or chipped.
・Be careful not to drag the dish on the table to prevent scratches.
